Episode: Where are they Now?

I love HGTV.  House Hunters International, Property Brothers, Love it or List……regardless of which show, it is my favorite station.  So imagine my utter shock and delight when HGTV surprised me in my very own living room one year ago this week.

My Happy Place 🙂

Mom Caves, where Beth Stern and Jared Walker Dostie give a very deserving mom a room makeover, had picked me through a combination of chance and connection.  Let’s just say I may not have been the most deserving, but I have the very best husband.   For one season, 13 mothers were given new living spaces that were nothing short of spectacular.  In my completely biased opinion, it was HGTV’s best show on the air.  However, the show was never renewed and very short-lived.

And as was intended when the room was created, I have hosted many events in the space.  Family parties, late night drinks by the fire with the Hubby, Book Club, Girl Scout meetings, PTO planning sessions and of course Ladies Night.  Needless to say, the room has embodied the very spirit it was created for.

These days, I often am asked if I still like the room.  And I have to say – I still hate wallpaper, but not my wallpaper.    In fact, aside from adding more family photos and moving a chair to the other side of the space, the room has relatively stayed exactly the same.  It has become my room and is affectionately called the “mom cave” by the kids,  my hubby and everyone who visits.  So one year later, my room remains the same and quite honestly, I believe it will remain this way for some years to come.  I look back fondly on that week and despite suffering a wicked tax slap this past tax season, it was worth every minute.

Holiday Parties

Holiday Parties

This Mother’s Day, I believe there will be breakfast in bed, a convertible ride down to my beloved Jersey Shore for lunch, planting in the garden and a relaxing evening nestled on my couch with a good book and a fine glass of wine in my Mom Cave exactly one year since it’s completion – and I can’t think of a better way to spend the day.

Special Side Note:  During the filming of Mom Caves, my very best friend who was part of the “cast” had literally found out she was pregnant with her first child during filming. I am happy to share that today, for her very first Mother’s Day, she will be celebrating with her very handsome little man and hubby.

My Finally Friday Secret

A long week.  We all have them, and lately they seem to happen more and more often.   I have about given up hope that weeks will run according to plan and be stress-free.  Hell, I get nervous when everything does run smoothly because I am certain I made a mistake somewhere along the schedule.

So this week, for Finally Friday, I wanted to share with you my secret to getting through the work week.

It’s actually quite simple and easy for anyone to do.

What is it?

PLAY MUSIC LOUD

Simple, right?  Beastie Boys, The Black Keys, LL Cool J, Arcade Fire, Lord Huron, Beyonce……the list is eclectic,  but it works.  Played loud, it keeps me sane and smiling.  Even helps me deal with the occasional WTF moments and people. So get your playlist and smile through to Friday.

Now it’s your turn.  What’s on your playlist?

Happy Weekend Folks!

I am Listening to

On this sunny bright 54 degree Friday,

here in Central NJ,

I am working from home in my favorite spot in the house ,

with my desk facing the afternoon sun beaming through the window,

and listening to a tune that just needs to shared again on this blog.

Happy Friday Friends!  What are you listening to?

Pinterest – You Loose this Valentine’s Day!

photo(3)I am not certain that I can still blame Super Storm Sandy, but I feel like I am in perpetual catch-up mode.  Just last week, I realized that Ash Wednesday was less than one week away and Valentine’s Day was hot on its tail.  Sure I posted on my Facebook page cute crafts and ideas for children to do, but at the time of posting I assumed I had plenty of time to get my act together.

Wrong.

Sunday night I realized that the adorable crafts and cards I intended to let the children pretend to do was just not going to happen.  Between the chaos that is life, there was no way I could swing adding “making valentine cards” to the list.  So shortly after my epiphany, I found myself at Michael’s Craft Store with discounted Valentine supplies in my hand.  Armed with one box per child and one extra for mistakes, I brought home the easy-peasy Valentine crafts.  I am not certain these crafts were made with the intention of being cards, but they fit my need and most importantly, my children were able to put them together ALL BY THEMSELVES.

So Pinterest, with all of your allure of adorable crafts and cards and homemade gifts for teachers – you loose this round.  My sanity and my precious time out-smarted you.  Now mind you, I still sat for close to one hour spelling the names of 20 children and the words “to” and “from” for my Little Man, but I assure you, the pleasure and satisfaction of seeing both Little Man and his older sister create and put together their own Valentine Day cards was well worth it.

Ready and Waiting

Last year – before the winter began – I bought four sleds, two snow suits, two pairs of boots and two snowmen kits.  That very same Christmas, the kids received two more sleds and two more snowmen kits.  Oh…. and Little Man made the most perfectly inaccurate snow ruler.  We were so prepared and the snow never came.

Fast forward to this year: a very insulting snow storm on the heels of a devastating hurricane gave us the chance to wear some of the brand-spanking-new-getting-too-tight gear and a smaller storm over the holiday season allowed us to use one of the four snowmen kits.  Since then, we have had several clippings of snow that melts before it even needs to be shoveled.

This weekend, the New England area is expected to get pummeled with a blizzard.  While that is far more snow than I care for, my area is expected (as of today) to get several inches.  I am not certain we will be able to take the sleds to our favorite hill, but I have my milk, eggs and bread stocked in my fridge and almost outgrown boots and snow suits ready for the kids to wear.

This of course means, the storm will pass us with but a flake or two.
